A social story for playing with siblings

when the answer is "not yet".

A brother building a tower, a sister who wants in, a grabbed piece, a shout. Vivi turns that moment into a narrated, animated story your child stars in: how to ask for a part in the game, and what to do when the answer is not yet.

Who it helps

Practicing joining a sibling's game in a story, as the main character.

For children who grab, interrupt or melt down when a sibling will not let them in, and for the sibling on the other side of it. Autistic children who find turn-taking and hearing a "no" hard often do better with a script they have seen before, and that is what a social story gives them.

Both children get a voice in the story. Nobody is made to share everything.

  1. Wanting in

A sibling is building something, and your child wants to join right now.

  2. Not yet

The sibling says not yet. Your child feels left out, and a hand reaches for a piece.

  3. Asking for a part

With a parent's help, your child asks to add one piece or take a small role, and the sibling agrees on which.

  4. Playing, or something else

Your child adds their part to the building. If the sibling needs time alone, there is another game to go to.

Yours, not ours. These are the moments a story like this usually walks through. You choose what goes into your child's, and read every page before it is animated.

Questions parents ask

About joining a sibling's game, in short.

  1. When should we watch it?

Not in the middle of a fight. Watch it on a calm afternoon, and again before playtime on days when the two of them are already scratchy with each other.

  2. Can I use my real children?

Yes. Tell Vivi their names, who is older, and what they usually build or play, and read every page before it is animated. Ask for changes in plain words.

  3. How do I teach my child to join a sibling's game without a fight?

Give them a short way to ask, help both children agree on a small role, and name a second activity for when the answer is no. A social story with your child as the main character shows the whole sequence, including the no, so it is not a surprise.

  4. How much does it cost?

Your first story is free in your first 30 days. After that you buy credits: 3 for $9, 10 for $26 or 30 for $66. A story is 1 credit, and a Fully Animated story is 10 more. Your first routine, Choose-Along and plan are free, then 1 credit each. Bought credits never expire.
