A social story for asking for help

when the zip is stuck.

The class is lining up to go outside, and the jacket zip will not go. Pulling harder, going quiet, walking away. Vivi turns that into a narrated, animated story your child stars in: pointing to the stuck part, asking, and finishing the zip themselves.

Who it helps

Practicing asking for help in a story, as the main character.

For children who struggle silently, give up or get angry at the thing instead of asking, and for children who find it hard to start a conversation with an adult, as many autistic children do. A social story gives them the words, or the gesture, before the moment.

Asking for help is shown as a skill, not a failure.

  1. Stuck

Everyone is getting ready to go outside, and the zip will not go up.

  2. Pulling harder

Your child tugs, goes quiet, and thinks about leaving the jacket open. Frustration is building.

  3. Pointing and asking

A short request, or just pointing at the zip and saying "this part". The teacher comes over.

  4. Finishing it

The teacher gets the zip started, and your child pulls it the rest of the way, then goes outside with everyone.

Yours, not ours. These are the moments a story like this usually walks through. You choose what goes into your child's, and read every page before it is animated.

Questions parents ask

About asking for help, in short.

  1. How often should we watch it?

A few times a week, on calm days, and before anything with lots of fiddly tasks, like a trip or a new class. It is a skill story, so a little and often works best.

  2. Can I change what my child gets stuck on?

Yes. Shoes, a lunchbox, a puzzle, a tap. Tell Vivi what it usually is and who the helper is, and read every page before it is animated. Ask for changes in plain words.

  3. How do I teach my autistic child to ask for help?

Give them one short request or a gesture that always works, help only with the stuck part, and let them finish. A social story with your child as the main character shows the same request getting the same answer, every time they watch it.

  4. How much does it cost?

Your first story is free in your first 30 days. After that you buy credits: 3 for $9, 10 for $26 or 30 for $66. A story is 1 credit, and a Fully Animated story is 10 more. Your first routine, Choose-Along and plan are free, then 1 credit each. Bought credits never expire.

Make it about your child tonight.
